When you think of the world of sports, you can call out certain names and the sport is readily recognizable. If you mention Michael Jordan, you immediately think of basketball. If it is Pele, then the sport is what the world recognizes as football and what America calls soccer. When it comes to the world of poker, the one name that is synonymous with the game is that of Doyle Brunson.



If there was anyone in poker who was fitted for a life story, autobiography or movie, it would most definitely have to be the man who brought poker to the masses. Born on August 10th, 1933 in Longworth, TX, and now living in Las Vegas, Doyle started playing poker even when in high school. While he was able to take money off of his teammates, Brunson was actually more skilled at the game of basketball. He led his team to the Texas state championship and was courted by the Minneapolis (now known as Los Angeles) Lakers during the heyday of the legendary George Mikan. Events occurred, however, that forced Doyle off that path to basketball stardom.

While on his way to play with one of the fifty greatest players to ever play in the NBA, Brunson still had to earn some money. He wasn't set on the pro basketball game and wanted to keep his options open for college, if it came to that. When Doyle suffered a severe compound fracture to his right leg in a gypsum factory accident, he recognized that he was never going to play in the fledgling NBA and concentrated on his schooling, eventually earning a Masters degree from Hardin- Simmons University.

Once he graduated, however, he wasn't sure of the next step. He wanted to teach (feeling it was an honorable profession), but the money wasn't there. He went to work in a normal job, selling business machines, until he started playing poker while he was there to service the machines. When the card playing became more lucrative than the machine business, Doyle knew that there was another calling for his skills.

Thus, he hit the road to earn a living for his family, eventually hooking up with fellow legends of poker Amarillo Slim, "Sailor" Roberts and many others. Dodging the law and the guns, these "Texas Gamblers" were the players of the game throughout the 50's and the 60's. Upon the introduction of poker in Las Vegas, Doyle found a home.

When the World Series of Poker started, it was a one tournament game, with Johnny Moss being voted the World Champion that first year. As the tournament grew, Doyle was able to capture the World Championship in 1976 and 1977, one of only three men who repeated as champion. He has since gone on in the World Series to seize ten bracelets, including the 2005 $5000 Short Handed No-Limit Championship. He has also vanquished the World Poker Tour as well, winning the 2004 Legends of Poker Championship in an epic heads up battle with Lee Watkinson. Overall since the turn of the century, he has cashed in twelve tournaments with three championships in that time.

Doyle has also authored the definitive books on poker as well. When "Super/System" was released in 1978, it became the bible of poker players worldwide. When it was updated in 2005, "Super System 2" became a must have in any poker player's library. Through his fifty years of experience, Doyle has given the game to those who want to accept it.

The man called "Texas Dolly" (which came from a mistake from oddsmaker Jimmy the Greek; he misread the written name on a tournament card and Doyle has been known as that since) has a style at the table that, to be honest, is unknown. Since he has written about the game, played it for fifty years and continues to be a puzzle at the tables, you never know what you will go up against. His goal is to be competitive until he is eighty. The poker world will be so much better with the legendary Doyle Brunson in the game!

Las Vegas erstreckt sich über eine Fläche von 340 km2 und hat rund 650'000 Einwohner.
