London/Munich, 27. November 2012 - For the fourth time since 2007, MECN is updating and expanding its unique and well-received benchmark study of the global lottery industry. This study again provides a wealth of information on lottery-specific industry benchmarks far beyond existing sales comparisons. In addition, the fourth edition includes many new analyses, in particular a greater number of analyses of the interactive/Internet segments.
Since social media and networks, such as Facebook, and topics such as social gam(bl)ing are becoming more and more important, MECN also included, for the first time, analyses of activities and successes of lotteries on social networks.
The updated study includes: • New in 4th edition - Many analyses of the interactive/Internet segments including product breakdown (Internet lotto, betting,...), mobile business, active users, .... • New in 4th edition - Comparison to private Internet gambling companies - MECN also analysed and benchmarked private online gambling operators in MECN's recent Online Gambling Benchmarking Study. Therefore, in many Internet-related analyses MECN could also include several examples (e.g., best and average benchmark) of private operators. • New in 4th edition - Social media and networks benchmarking and success stories - In-depth analyses of the social media activities (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) of lotteries. Moreover, MECN has added a total of seven best practice case studies identifying potential success factors. • 2010 and 2011 data - Analyses of data from ca. 130 state/public lotteries and operators for the years 2010 and 2011 as well as long-term trend analyses reaching back to 2005. • Sales-related benchmarks - Total sales and product-related sales (e.g., lotto, betting, instant, ...) benchmarks, such as per-capita sales analyses. • Sales channel benchmarks, such as number of residents and sales per outlet, interactive/Internet sales per capita, ... • Marketing benchmarks, such as marketing/advertising expenses in % of total sales, optimal media mix of the ad budget, ... • Operating expense benchmarks, such as operating expenses in % of sales broken down into human resources (e.g., average personnel expenses, sales per employee), IT and communications, and other benchmarks. • Success factors of the lottery business - The analysis of success factors is based on an updated survey conducted among more than 40 lottery executives. • Best practices - For most benchmark areas MECN provides updated best practice case studies of the leading lotteries In total, the report has 116 pages and nearly 120 graphs/exhibits.
