Nevada casinos won $805.7 million from gamblers in May for a 4 percent decline _ the result of a tourism slump caused in part by the Iraq war.
The decline reported Thursday by the state Gaming Control Board was the second in a row following eight straight months of increases for the clubs. A breakdown of the statewide average showed declines in most major markets. Reno, North Las Vegas and Laughlin were the exceptions.
The GCB's Frank Streshley said the tourism slowdown began following the March 17 start of the U.S.- led war against Iraq, increased in April and continued for most of May. "The Iraq war had an impact on travel, especially international travel," said Streshley. "Through the middle of May it was very soft ... and special events were extremely soft. Things picked up toward the end of the month."
Streshley also said the state's percentage fees based on the win were down $17.7 million from a May forecast for the fiscal year that just ended. The total was $559.1 million, for year-to-year growth of just 0.8 percent. The state's Economic Forum had hoped for 4 percent growth in the fees.
The win is what was left in casino coffers from $12.5 billion bet by gamblers during May. "Win"is a gross figure, with no operating costs or other expenses deducted. And it's casino revenue only _ separate from hotel, restaurant or bar revenues generated by the resorts.
Las Vegas Strip resorts accounted for $404.9 million of the May win. That's down 5.6 percent from May 2002. The Reno-Sparks-North Tahoe area in northern Nevada had May winnings of $93.6 million, up 0.7 percent. A breakdown shows Reno was up 3.4 percent, but Sparks was down 8.3 percent.
Resorts on Lake Tahoe's south shore won $24.5 million, down 8.3 percent from May 2002 totals. Elsewhere in the north, Elko County winnings of $17.7 million were down 7.5 percent; and the Minden- Carson City win of $8.6 million was up 0.4 percent.
The $805.7 million statewide win included $527.9 million from slot machines, down 6.1 percent; and $270.2 million from table games, barely up 0.1 percent. Games that produced the most revenue included blackjack at $98.6 million; craps at $38.8 million; and baccarat at $38.5 million.
Sports books won $4.4 million, up 19.6 percent. Dollar slots won $100.7 million; quarter slots won $160.2 million; and nickel slots won $123.6 million.
