New judges confirmed for Totally Gaming Awards

BACTA blasts new UK tax proposals STREET UK trade body BACTA has issued a warning to the UK government, arguing that plans to introduce a new tax system for the gaming industry would almost certainly add to the 200 arcade closures over the past two years. BACTA president Derek Petrie said that, under the proposed system, arcade operators could face new tax bills of up to £400,000, which he labelled a crippling burden for many businesses.
Ladbrokes, Sportingbet end takeover talks ONLINE Bookmaker Ladbrokes and Sportingbet announced that they have mutually called off takeover talks, citing an increasingly turbulent market and issues pertaining to the online betting group's Turkish operation. Richard Glynn, Ladbrokes' chief executive, said that both parties had been unable to agree a structure which delivers increased shareholder value within an acceptable regulatory environment. Intralot, GTech make OPAP tenders BETTING OPAP has accepted tender offers from Intralot and GTech – a unit of Italian lottery operator Lottomatica – for the supply of information technology. G2E attendance up EVENT Organisers of Las Vegas' Global Gaming Expo (G2E) revealed that this year's event attracted nearly 26,000 attendees, a rise of almost 5 percent on 2010. Held at the Sands Expo & Convention Center, figures also showed that 440 exhibitors attended taking up 250,000 square feet of exhibit space. Exhibitor Robert Garity, senior sales executive of Micros, confirmed that traffic around the exhibition was good, adding that the company had done well out of the event.
Alderney Gambling Commission announces full review ONLINE Alderney's Gambling Control Commission has announced a full policy review following its highly publicised problems with Full Tilt Poker. Andre Wilsenach, the commission's Executive Director, said the regulator would look into what went wrong and introduce necessary changes after it was found that the online gaming firm, registered in Alderney, had misled authorities over finances.
Bell made Isle of Man Chief Minister ONLINE Alan Bell, the Isle of Man's Treasury and Economic Development Minister, has been appointed as new Chief Minister. Bell, a long term advocate of e-gaming, has been a key- figure in helping the Isle of Man establish itself as an internationally recognised centre for responsible e-gaming businesses.
Nevada reports small downturn in casino earnings CASINO Nevada's casinos posted a 6.7 percent drop in year-on-year earnings for the month of August, to $887 million. The Nevada Gaming Control Board reported that the Las Vegas Strip posted an 8.7 percent drop in the period, to $497 million, while Reno's casino earnings fell by just over 11 percent. Earnings at downtown Las Vegas’ casinos dropped by 4.2 percent.
IGT makes Dutch pact ONLINE IGT has made a preliminary agreement with Holland Casino which will allow the state- owned operator to use IGT's software solutions, including its integrated membership and loyalty system, across the Netherlands. IGT CEO Patti Hart and Holland Casino CEO Dick Flink have signed a letter of intent, confirming that a definitive co-operation agreement is expected shortly.
BBPA praises last minute amendment to Localism Bill STREET The House of Lords' last minute amendment to the government's Localism Bill has saved the UK pub trade millions of pounds according to the British Beer & Pub Association. Brigid Simmonds, BBPA Chief Executive, praised the government for listening to its concerns and removing the potential for huge uncertainty and delays that would have been created by the original plans.
GamCare goes with GREaT for helpline BETTING UK gambling support charity GamCare has picked the GREaT Foundation to run its gambling helpline for three years beginning October 2011, as well as its counselling and treatment services until the end of March 2012. Chairman Anthony Jennens said that they were also seeking to develop and expand its existing counselling network by agreeing a similar three year contract for delivering treatment services from April 1st, 2012.
