Her throat was slit, husband found blindfolded and stabbed in Macau MACAU authorities are worried about a resurgence of casino-related crime after a top casino executive and her husband were found stabbed to death in a car.

Last Friday, Ms Chao Yuek-hong, the executive director of the Golden Palace VIP room in Casino Lisboa, was found slumped in the front seat of her car with her throat slit near the Zhuhai Golf Villa in Tangjia Bay. Her husband, Mr Lam Pou-sang, a manager at the casino, was also found blindfolded with multiple stab wounds, reported the South China Morning Post.

According to the Macau Daily News, Ms Chao, who was in her 50s, was a successful and well-liked veteran of the gambling business who was looking after three VIP gambling halls. Under her management, the Golden Palace experienced a boom in revenue, raking in a Macau- record monthly chip turnover of US$700 million ($1.1 billion) in May last year.

The gambling hall is believed to be the most profitable in Macau, with six gaming tables where the minimum bet is 10,000 patacas ($2,000) and the maximum bet 2 million patacas. Ms Chao's killing - the first of a Macau VIP gaming room operator since 1996 - has authorities worried that casino-related crimes could return to levels seen during the chaotic pre-handover days of the former Portuguese enclave.

Last week, gaming tycoon Stanley Ho revealed that dozens of VIP-room operators are are facing bankruptcy due to fierce competition. Because of the increasing competition, legislator Au Kam-san said that there was a chance that casino-related crimes could return. 'Few of the bloody crimes committed before the handover have been solved, which is to say the old rings have stayed intact,' he said.

'Now they can feed off the lucrative casinos... but they are bound to fight again once profits shrink.'
