The UK and the EU accused US of protectionism (UK).- Online sports betting companies Sportingbet and 888 have said that they are currently looking into whether the US’ new legislation contravened commitments made by the country to the World Trade Organisation. The WTO last year ruled that the United States’ laws concerning internet gaming was in breach of its rules following complaints from Antigua.

The Unlawful Gaming Enforcement Act makes it illegal for banks and credit card operators to process online gaming payments in the U.S. Although PartyGaming and 888 announced that they would cease their gambling operations in the country once President Bush ratifies the new law, Sportingbet, which makes about 70 per cent of its revenue in the US, has suggested that it might continue its business there, potentially using offshore banks to make transactions.

Nigel Payne, Sportingbet’s CEO, told Radio 4 that it may or may not be in the wider interest of shareholders to run the risk that executives may get extradited from the UK if that were to happen.

Payne also mentioned that the UK government along with the European Union had been “disappointingly silent” after accusing the US of protectionism
