Yesterday the European Commission announced that it had begun investigations of three European Union member nations, in order to determine whether or not they are restricting access to their online sports betting and online casino gambling markets. The executive office of the European Union confirmed they will be pursuing information from Italy and France in regards to online betting, including sports betting. They will also be obtaining information from Austria on its online casino industry.

All of these investigations began in April 2006, and are set to run in tandem with existing probes concerning many other nations including the Netherlands, and Germany. A statement was released by the European Union’s Internal Market Commissioner, Charlie McCreevy, which said, “I have made no secret of the fact that I intend to pursue these inquiries. I also have concerns about the legal uncertainty suffered by sport betting operators and related stakeholders.”

Most of the twenty-five European Union nations have state-owned companies that rule national markets. Although there is free movement across the European Union, restrictions are often set to protect a general interest. This national betting monopoly syndrome was highlighted last month with the arrests of two Bwin executives in France.

EBA secretary general, Didier Dewyn, said, “How long must EU licensed and regulated operators endure legislation which deprives their executives of even the basic right to travel freely in the EU?” “We hope these new proceedings will put an end to the witch-hunts .”
