THE BASICS Las Vegas comes east, gargantuan and glittering. That was essentially the dream when the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, which curiously disdains commas, opened in 2003. And that’s essentially the reality today, after completion of a major expansion several months ago that added more slot machines, more blackjack tables and three splashy restaurants affiliated with nationally acclaimed chefs (Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay and Michael Mina).



Built at a cost of more than $1 billion, the Borgata shares corporate DNA with two Las Vegas luxury hotel leaders, Mandalay Bay and the Bellagio. The common heritage shows in the Borgata’s height (43 stories); its golden shell, which glitters in the sunlight; its opulent shops, brimming with Cartier jewelry and Rolex watches; and its stabs at artsy sophistication, like a leitmotif of multicolored glass sculptures that look like octopuses as seen by Timothy Leary on a day of heavy usage.

Of course, the lobby can turn into a raucous human traffic jam, and these crowds, coupled with the Borgata’s mammoth scale, make it the antithesis of a boutique hotel. But it tries with little grace notes to be less generic, less oppressive. Each of the elevators has a video screen that plays, on a seemingly endless loop, a given movie for a given period. On my way to dinner, I watched Renée Zellweger dance her little heart out in “Chicago.”

THE LOCATION While most big-name hotels in Atlantic City cluster along the Boardwalk and face the ocean, the Borgata belongs to a newer generation that strives for exclusivity by retreating from the beach. It’s off on its own, skirted by scenic inland waterways and less scenic roadways and parking lots.

THE ROOMS Pretty much what you’d expect: a cookie-cutter rectangle with TV and drawers opposite the bed, table and armchairs in a far corner and with the extra square feet, extra pillows and muted palette that come with a higher price tag and a classier sense of self. My green, gray and beige room had a sweeping view of channels with boat traffic; other rooms look toward the hotels and casinos that face the beach.

THE BATHROOM Enormous, filled with white marble and just about ideal, if you don’t mind the absence of a proper tub. (I didn’t.) The toilet is in its own closet. The big stall shower has a marble bench. The stainless steel tissue box and soap dish gleam. The requisite grooming products (yuzu-bergamot moisturizer, mint-thyme hair wash) smell like the nexus of a salad and an orchard, which is to say wonderful. A quibble: the big towels are a little scratchy.



AMENITIES Lots and lots, but of varying appeal. There’s a spa offering treatments of pretty much any imaginable kind. There’s a spiffy gym with top-notch equipment, but you have to pay $10 a day to use it.

ROOM SERVICE Sluggish, based on my one try. When I called, I listened to more than 15 rings before someone picked up. I was told that my lunch order — a chicken sandwich and a garden salad — would be up within 45 minutes. At precisely the 45-minute mark, it arrived. The ingredients seemed fresh; the chicken wasn’t overcooked. After I ate, I wheeled the table into the hall, so a service person could remove it. More than six hours later, it was still there.

THE BOTTOM LINE The Borgata provides more luxury and style than most Atlantic City peers. But it can’t quite overcome the erratic service and assembly-line aspects of so many hotels of its kind. On the one hand, a requested newspaper arrived on time the next morning. On the other, the spa never returned a call and the lines at the front desk can be epic. Rates change over the course of the week, so a standard double may be $299 on Thursday but $459 on Saturday.
