Shares of MGM Mirage Inc., the world's second-largest gambling company, rose more than 5 percent in Thursday afternoon trading, hitting a new 52-week high of $46.60 on the New York Stock Exchange. Bank of America (nyse: BAC) raised its target price on the company's stock by $3 to $53, and said the company's expected fourth-quarter earnings of 40 to 45 cents a share were conservative, according to a note from analyst J. Cogan.

"We sense high-end gaming indicators leading into New Year's remain quite healthy, and at this juncture we remain comfortable with our 'adjusted' 4Q EPS estimate of 53 cents per share," Cogan wrote. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial, on average, expect a fourth-quarter profit of 47 cents per share. Future upgrades at its Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Monte Carlo properties also should help the company, with Cogan saying same-store annual earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization growth forecast across Las Vegas at 3 percent through 2009 "could prove conservative."

KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst Dennis Forst on Thursday kept a "Buy" rating on Las Vegas-based MGM Mirage (nyse: MGG), also with a $53 per share price target. "Its prime industry competitor, Harrah's, will be less competitive as it is involved in a leveraged buyout situation which will likely limit its capital resources for the foreseeable future," Forst wrote. "We are big fans of the management and assets of MGM Mirage."

Shares of MGM added $2.47, or 5.3 percent, to $48.23 on the New York Stock Exchange where it has traded between $34.20 and $46.34 in the past 52-week period.
