Mashantuckets hire landscape designers for latest expansion

Mashantucket -- Some casino operators don't want their customers to even think about the outdoors, but the Mashantucket Pequots have told the landscape architect for their latest expansion that they want visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of their reservation.

The tribe announced Wednesday that it has hired Cairone & Kaupp, a Philadelphia-based landscape architecture firm, to design the outdoor features that will accompany the new hotel tower, casino and convention center the tribe is constructing on the site formerly known as Parking Lot 9. Preliminary plans call for an outdoor amphitheater, an ice skating rink and a woodland boardwalk set off by four distinct garden-scapes that highlight the tribe's history and the region's four seasons.

Joseph Cairone, the firm's co-founder, said he has already been thinking about the plants and landscape features that will eventually be installed in what is now just a muddy building lot. “With Foxwoods you have one of my personal favorite landscapes,” said Cairone, who has been in the business more than 30 years and designed the landscapes for many casinos. “You have an incredible diversity of plants and landscape materials. There are rock outcrops, watercourses and ponds and things like the Great Cedar Swamp, which we just don't see in many cases.”

Cairone said his firm would search for high quality plantings and materials that would reflect the surrounding geography and changing seasons, such as broad leaf evergreens and stands of rhododendrons much like the ones along the banks of the Great Cedar Swamp. The preliminary plan includes a “salmon bear garden” in which the natural ripples and rills of a running stream would be re-created as the habitat for a mechanical bear that scoops fish from the water.

Cairone envisions the “Fox People's Garden” as an homage to the tribe with sculptures and artifacts and a tent that could be used for events in inclement weather. The plan also calls for a boardwalk on which guests could literally walk through the woods and a story-telling pit with a stage and seating for 100. The landscaping would incorporate several water features, including an outdoor skating rink that will look like a natural pond during the warmer seasons.

The 26-year-old company landscape architect firm has designed landscapes at many casinos, including Atlantic City's newest property, the Borgata Hotel & Casino. The Foxwoods project is their first American Indian casino. Cairone said he first saw Foxwoods in 1995 when the firm consulted on landscaping for housing at Groton's Naval Submarine Base.

The challenge at Foxwoods will be to reflect the culture of the tribe and entertain and interest a diverse audience, Cairone said. He'll find joy in returning a parking lot to something that resembles its natural state. “This will be a story that kind of unfolds,” he said. “We're trying to be sensitive and preserve the environment, to respect this God-given background.”
