Consumer protection progresses (Austria).- The EU Parliament adopted the EU Services Directive last November 15th in Straßburg. The reorganisation is to make it easer for service providers to work abroad within the EU. Sensitive areas are exempt, however, including health and social services, public transportation, banking services, attorneys as well as lotteries and casinos.

The exception is justified by the fact that it is completely impossible to establish fair and cross-border competition in the area of gaming. Moreover, consumer protection and public order justifies the restriction of freedom of services for lotteries and casinos.

Established legal regulation of the sensitive gaming market in Austria will also be legally and politically harmonised with the EU in the future.

The effective Austrian gambling law is considered exemplary on an international basis. Its structure guarantees a contemporary as well as socially responsible range of games. The competence and serious approach of license holders Casinos Austria and Austrian Lotteries are also uncontested
