MACAU, China, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- A Macau casino has been ordered to pay a nearly $100,000 slot machine jackpot won by a 16-year-old Hong Kong girl, the BBC reported.

The Sands Casino had refused to pay the girl because she was underage. The Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau ordered The Sands to pay the jackpot, but not to the girl. "We have decided that the money must be paid, not to the child, but to her mother," Bureau Director Manuel Joaquim das Neves said in the South China Morning Post.

The bureau said that while there is a minimum age for entering a casino, there is not a minimum age for gambling in one. The Hong Kong girl received about $12 to play the slots from her grandmother as a New Year's present. She put it all in one slot machine and won big. The girl's mother and grandmother were in the casino, as well. The gaming bureau barred the mother from Macau's casinos for bringing a minor into a casino, the BBC said.
