The National Labor Relations Board has filed a complaint against the nonunion Aladdin hotel-casino based upon more than 70 charges of unfair labor practices leveled by Culinary Local 226. Culinary officials have said a majority of Aladdin's estimated 1,500 foodservice workers, porters and housekeepers want the union to recognize them in their dealings with hotel management. When Aladdin workers on the Culinary organizing committee went public with their intention to organize in early May, wearing union buttons and talking to fellow workers about the union, they said Aladdin management cracked down.
Aladdin executives and managers threatened employees with the loss of their jobs, interrogated workers about their union activities and enforced rules designed to intimidate union sympathizers, union officials said. "The size and intensity of the Aladdin's campaign and its attack on the workers is unprecedented," Culinary Staff Director Kevin Kline said Thursday. "This complaint is not a charge from us. It's a charge from the federal government."
The union stepped up its organizing efforts because the Aladdin is slated to change hands next year as a result of a pending bankruptcy reorganization. Union officials contend the buyers, a group fronted by Planet Hollywood Chairman Robert Earl, would be free to fire the entire work force 90 days after taking over the Aladdin. Earl and his management team have said they intend to keep the current employees.
An Aladdin spokeswoman issued a statement on the complaint, saying the Culinary Union has a history of utilizing complaints as a way to "publicly pressure companies into making decisions that do not represent the best interest and desires of the employees. "At the Aladdin, we have a proud history of respecting and protecting our employees' rights to job security, fair wages and secure benefits."
Aladdin management has refused to accept the union's preferred method of proving they represent a majority of workers, called card-check neutrality. Under the card-check system, management agrees to accept the union's collection of cards affirming workers' intent to let the union represent them rather than the secret-ballot votes required by federal labor law. "The union is currently trying to pressure the Aladdin to give up its employees' legal right to a secret ballot government sponsored election by insisting that they are recognized through a card count," the company statement read. "We believe that a card count, rather than a secret ballot election, deprives Aladdin employees their right to express their own opinion. We will continue to defend these rights."
NLRB Deputy Regional Attorney Stephen Wamser said the board, which enforces federal labor law, investigated the union's charges against the Aladdin before filing the complaint last week. A hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 2.
About 75 Aladdin workers on the Culinary's organizing committee held meetings Thursday at union headquarters. Buffet line cook Jose Beltran said his co-workers are worried about company reprisals if they make their union sympathies public. "They're scared," Beltran said. "Kitchen workers tell us they've been threatened that they'll lose their jobs."
The Aladdin öffnete seine Tore am 31. März 1966. Der Betrieb des Casinos und des Hotels dauerte bis im Jahre 1997.
1997 wurde The Aladdin abgerissen und an der gleichen Stelle The New Aladdin gebaut. Die Eröffnung von The New Aladdin fand offiziell am 17. August 2000 statt. Eigentlich öffnete es aber erst am 18. August 2000 wegen fehlenden Sicherheitsabnahmen.
Im Jahre 2003 wurde The New Aladdin von einer neuen Betreibergesellschaft übernommen und bekam den Namen Planet Hollywood Las Vegas.
Nach einer Renovation im Jahre 2007 erfolgte eine erneute Namensänderung in Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.
Seit dem Jahre 2010 ist der aktuelle Besitzer Caesars Entertainment.
