Mandalay Bay
Fresh from a profitable second quarter, Mandalay Resort Group has opened a combination daytime private topless beach and nighttime lounge. The company also has signed a deal to place wireless keyboards, Internet access and digital movies into the thousands of guest rooms on the Strip's “Mandalay Mile.”
Mandalay Resort Group last week said that its cash-flow profit rose to $172.1 million for the quarter, ahead of the $165.5 million for the same quarter in 2002. Officials also said net income grew to $42.3 million from $29.3 million for the same period last year. Gearing up for the normally slow fall season, the company has debuted its Moorea Beach Club, a private sandy beach area of 11 acres at the Mandalay Bay hotel. The beach, open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., permits topless bathing, but is open only to hotel guests who are at least age 21.
Women who are hotel guests are allowed into the beach area for free Sunday through Thursday, but men must pay $25 on weekdays and $35 on weekends. Hotel guests also can rent a “VIP area,” with a private pool inside the topless beach for $350 on weekdays and $500 on weekends.
After 10 p.m., the Moorea is open to the public, changing into what hotel officials call an “ultra beach lounge,” where men pay $35 and women are charged $15 to enter. The company, which owns and runs 11 Nevada casinos and has a 50-percent stake in the Silver Legacy in Reno, last week completed an agreement whereby Hospitality Network, a subsidiary of cable giant Cox Communications, will install digital in-room video services, high-speed Internet and wireless keyboards into the string of hotels on the Strip's south end. The hotels include Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Excalibur.
Meanwhile, officials also said they will offer fall tourist packages through Nov. 25 at Mandalay Bay, including a room, 2-for-1 deals on spa passes, meals and passes at House of Blues nightclub, and wine sampling for $119 per night.
Palm Mortuaries Themed backdrops, including a “Las Vegas” setting complete with oversized playing cards and dice plus a facsimile of the city's famous “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign, are being offered by Palm Mortuaries, Cemeteries and Crematories. The backdrops are to give grieving families “personal creative expression” during funerals, company officials said last week.
The Las Vegas-based death-care company announced that in addition to traditional funeral arrangements, customers can choose a golf setting, a garden theme and the Las Vegas scheme, which are part of a package the company calls the “Life Celebration Planner.” “We hope to ease the burden (on families) by helping to make all of the necessary arrangements less difficult to assemble,” said Ken Knauss, president of the company, which operates seven mortuaries and employs 200 people in the Las Vegas Valley.
The plan also enables families to place videos and pictures of their loved ones in a “permanent diary” maintained by Palm.
