Casinotrends: Gamblers On The Vegas Strip Are Very Different Than Those Downtown

When perusing the year-end Nevada gaming revenue reports for 2014 there was a lot of obvious information that most people see on a regular basis. People on the Vegas Strip gamble less than people in Downtown Vegas. This isn’t news as the revenue has been trending this way for over 20 years. However, one bit of information really stood out.

The difference between how people gamble on The Strip and downtown is growing. At least, that’s what the money says. Gaming revenue for the big Vegas Strip casinos in 2014 shows 46 percent comes fromslot machines (slots, video poker, etc.) This is a five-year downward trend for slot machine play. Meanwhile, “pit” revenue (includes table games, keno and bingo) increased to over half of gaming revenue with 50.4% last year.

Downtown Vegas casinos had a very different stream of revenue. In 2014, Downtown Vegas casinosderived 72% of its gaming revenue from slot machines while only 23.7% came from “pit” games. This is a gambling gap that seems as though it will continue to widen as older visitors leave the Vegas Strip and head downtown.

You may not notice this gap with your own eyes when you visit each area. Table games occupy much less space at most Downtown Vegas casinos. The space they have may be crowded, but the number of tables pales in comparison to the amount at big Strip casinos. Darn those eyes and their tricks.
