Park Place Entertainment will build a $75 million, 3,189-space parking garage adjacent to Caesars Atlantic City, the company said yesterday. The aim is to help solve a lack of parking that is seen as one of the biggest hurdles facing the resort as it tries to compete for the gambling dollar.

It also comes as Atlantic City undergoes a transformation that includes projects such as the $1 billion Borgata and Tropicana's $245 million shopping and restaurant complex. Unlike Las Vegas, much of Atlantic City's business comes from customers who drive to the city. Of the 33.1 million people who visited the city last year, a record 24.6 million arrived by car. "This new parking structure represents another major investment by our company in the future of Atlantic City," Park Place Chief Executive Wally Barr said.

The project will be located near the center of the Boardwalk. Park Place operates casinos under the Caesars, Bally's and Hilton brands. Construction on the garage will being in January and should be complete by the early 2005, said Brian Cahill, a Park Place spokesman. The garage will be located on the block bordered by Pacific and Atlantic avenues and Arkansas and Michigan avenues, near the center of the Boardwalk.

The garage will have pedestrian bridges connecting it to the Atlantic City Medical Center, the Caesars Atlantic City walking bridge, the Wild West Casino and Caesars Atlantic City.
