The gaming industry in Macao, which is dominated by casinos, has contributed over 9 billion patacas (1.125 billion US dollars) to the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government's tax coffer in the first 10 months of the year, the Macao Radio reported Friday.
The Macao Gaming Holding Company (SJM) earned 22.4 billion patacas (2.8 billion US dollars) in pre- tax revenue in the first 10 months. Upon its taxation agreement with the government, its due amount for the period has surpassed 9 billion patacas (1.125 billion US dollars), which was a projected tax target set for the whole year. The SAR government raked in 7.5 billion patacas (937.5 million US dollars) in taxes from the gaming industry in 2002, which was nearly half of the government's fiscal budget for the year.
Casino tycoon Stanley Ho now still runs all the 11 casinos in Macao. Two foreign casino runners, which entered the market through Macao's first launch of a public bidding for casino licenses last year, are still working on infrastructure construction for their theme casinos.
A major difference was that gaming taxes from casinos rose from 31.8 percent to 35 percent of their aggregate income after the liberalization of the gambling industry was officially kicked off on March 31.
Macao is the only place in China, where gaming businesses are legal. The gaming industry, the engine of the SAR's economy, has recorded brisk business after its return to the motherland in 1999, with the majority of the punters coming from Hong Kong, the mainland and Taiwan.
Macau (englisch Macao) liegt rund 50 Kilometer westlich von Hongkong und ist das Glücksspiel-Paradies in Asien.
Macau hat rund 40 Spielcasinos. Die grössten Casinos sind The Venetian Macao, MGM Macao, Wynn Macao, Galaxy StarWorld, City of Dreams, Sands Macao, Casino Lisboa.
