As Harrah's executives finalize the deal to buy Binion's and employees wait to hear whether they will be hired back on, the fate of the world famous World Series of Poker has been decided, and it's good news for Las Vegas. The World Series of Poker is going to stay right here in it's birthplace, in the casino where it all began -- Binion's Horseshoe.
Sweaty palms, stacks of chips, and millions of dollars in cold hard cash, that's what playing in the world series of poker is all about. "Everybody shows up for this -- millionaires, guys who scraped together $10,000, college students, geniuses, computer whizzes," says Howard Schwartz. Schwartz is a poker history buff, and the owner of the Gambler's Book Shop where he says people buy videotapes of old tournaments.
The World Series of Poker has grown from around 70 players during the first tournament held at Binion's back in 1970 to more than 1,000 thirty-four years later. Schwartz who is friends with several of the games' top players says the tradition needs to be carried on. "It's very important it be continued. It's important to the industry, for the town, for the game, and for the people itself," says Schwartz.
Harrah's Entertainment agrees. The company has decided to keep the World Series of Poker right here in Las Vegas, at Binion's Horseshoe. At least this year, there's been talk that casino executives may buy the Horseshoe, then turn around and sell it and move poker's top tournament to new digs. It's a hand Schwarz hopes is never played. "It belongs here, and it belongs at a place named Binion's," says Schwartz.
A Harrah's spokesperson says they're planning to hold this year's tournament at its usual time -- around mid-April into May. But they won't have definite plans until the sale of the Horseshoe is finalized.
Harrah's Entertainment has set up an informational hotline to update employees, vendors and the public. You can call the number to find out the latest on when the hotel will open.
