NEW YORK - Shares of gaming operators with properties in Macau climbed Tuesday as preliminary statistics showed strong March gaming revenue growth.

Lehman Brothers (nyse: LEH - news - people ) analyst Felicia Hendrix said in a client note that early figures indicate March gaming revenue surged 60 percent from the prior- year period to about $1.26 billion and was up 10 percent from February.

Las Vegas-based casino operators, including Wynn Resorts Ltd. (nasdaq: WYNN - news - people ), Las Vegas Sands Corp. (nyse: LVS - news - people ) and MGM Mirage (nyse: MGM - news - people ), have invested billions to develop upscale casino resorts in Macau to attract China's newly rich. Wynn Resorts runs the Wynn Macau, while Las Vegas Sands Corp. operates the Sands Macao and Venetian Macao. MGM Mirage opened the MGM Grand Macau in December.

In 2006, the territory, which is the only place in China with legalized gambling, took in more gaming revenue than the Las Vegas Strip. That year, Macau's casinos reported $6.95 billion in gambling revenue, while the Strip made $6.69 billion, according to regulators in the cities.

MGM Mirage's stock added $1.33, or 2.3 percent, to $60.10 in afternoon trading, while shares of Las Vegas Sands gained $2.80, or 3.8 percent, to $76.44. Wynn's stock jumped $7, or 7 percent, to $107.64. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $85.53 to $176.14.
