Las Vegas-based MGM Mirage has forged an alliance with British developer Peel Holdings to build at least four casino and leisure projects in cities across the country. More could follow. The planned developments in Liverpool, Manchester, Salford and Glasgow could be worth £650m and create 20,000 jobs.

The proposals depend on the Government delivering expected reforms to loosen restrictions on the siting and operation of casinos in Britain. They also need local planning permission. 'All the projects we have announced today, and others we are still exploring, have the potential to result in unprecedented levels of inward investment, jobs and tourism,' said Lloyd Nathan, MGM Mirage's managing director for Europe.

MGM Mirage is expanding its presence in Britain. It has already announced a tie-up with British Land to develop a casino and leisure complex in Sheffield, and a link with Newcastle United for a venture next to the football club's stadium. In London, it has plans for a £138m casino with exhibition organiser Earls Court and Olympia Group. It has also bought a 25% stake in Metro Casinos, which has a site in Bristol, and is bidding for dog track operator Wembley.

Peel Holdings chairman John Whittaker said the tie-up with MGM Mirage was an 'ideal partnership'. 'Peel has extensive property interests and land holdings near major cities. MGM Mirage owns and operates what we believe to be the best leisure, entertainment and gaming destinations in the world,' Whittaker said.

The Manchester project would be sited next to the City of Manchester Stadium, while the Salford venue lies alongside the Manchester Ship Canal, a waterway part-run by Peel. In Glasgow the gaming tables and slot machines could go on former docks and shipyard land on the north bank of the Clyde. The Liverpool project would also be sited on a waterfront location.

The Mirage war ein Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas, USA. Das Hotel wurde im November 1989 als erstes Megaresort in Las Vegas eröffnet.

Im Hotel gab es eine grosse tropische Pool-Landschaft sowie 11 Restaurants, darunter das Restaurant 'Renoir', das mit Originalgemälden von Renoir dekoriert war. Auf über 30 Etagen waren 3044 Zimmer untergebracht. Mit Einbruch der Dämmerung fand vor dem Hotel alle 30 Minuten ein künstlicher Vulkanausbruch statt.

Im Mirage konnten die weissen Tiger und Löwen sowie die Delfine von Siegfried & Roy in ihrem Habitat besichtigt werden.
