Ahead of Bell: Analyst eyes MGM as going concern

05.03.2009, Auditors will probably add an important qualifier to their assessment of MGM Mirage's 2008 financials, an analyst said Wednesday, after the casino operator delayed filing its annual results and said it may default on its debt.

Late Tuesday, Las Vegas-based MGM Mirage (nyse: MGM - news - people ) cautioned in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it may have to break its loan agreements this year unless the economy starts to pick up and more people begin gambling again.

MGM, like other casino operators, has struggled as consumers curb their discretionary spending due to the prolonged housing slowdown, rising food costs, eroding credit and unemployment concerns.

While MGM is in talks to amend its covenants, Robin Farley of UBS (nyse: UBS - news - people ) predicts a "going concern" statement will probably be included in MGM Mirage's annual results.

A going-concern qualification refers to a company's ability to continue to operate indefinitely.

Late last year the independent accountants of rival Las Vegas Sands Corp. (nyse: LVS - news - people ) included going concern language in its financials, only to remove it after the casino operator received a $2.1 billion capital infusion.

Farley maintained a "Neutral" rating and $4.50 price target for MGM, but warned that the price target faces downside risk because it includes the value of the company's undeveloped land, which continues to diminish.

Meanwhile, Dennis Forst of KeyBanc Capital Markets cut MGM Mirage to "Hold" from "Buy," saying in a client note that investors are not likely to buy MGM's stock - even at a low price - "until there is substantially more clarity of its debt situation."

"It is clear that investors are less willing to pay for MGM's potential today and are looking exclusively to capital needs and cash flows," he added.
