(US).- The Nevada Gaming Control Board recommended a gambling license for the Wynn Las Vegas mega resort. The unanimous decision came after a lengthy presentation to the three-member board by Steve Wynn, chairman and chief executive of Wynn Resorts, which owns the us$ 2.7 billion property.


Wynn will seek final approval for a gambling license from the Nevada Gaming Commission on March 24.

Wynn Las Vegas is the brainchild of Wynn, who designed and built the Bellagio, The Mirage and Treasure Island, some of Las Vegas´ most famous casinos. Wynn said his newest property will be unlike his past creations.

"Wynn Las Vegas is different than anything we´ve ever done," he said. "The challenge here in Las Vegas is that people want things bigger and better when they come here on vacation. The challenge then is how to assemble those things that people want."

Wynn will seek final approval for a gambling license from the Nevada Gaming Commission on March 24. The commission´s OK is one of the last hurdles Wynn faces in opening the hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The project has been five years in the making and is scheduled to open April 28.

The 2,700-room Wynn Las Vegas will employ more than 8,000 people, and it´s expected to generate at least 1 million new visitors in 2005, lifting the city´s financial prospects. The new mega resort will feature a 10,300 sq. meters (111,000 sq feet) casino, 19 restaurants and bars, a 2,087-seat showroom, 7,000 sq meters (74,700 sq feet) of retail space and over 20,700 sq meters (223,000 sq feet) of convention space. It also will have an 18-hole championship golf course and an art gallery that will hold Wynn´s private collection.

Wynn has signed the Tony Award-winning musical "Avenue Q" to open in September 2005, and also said he intends to add a 1,500-suite hotel tower to Wynn Las Vegas that would open in 2007.
