MGM Mirage up on report of possible casino sales

07.04.2009, Shares of MGM Mirage surged Monday following a weekend report indicating that the struggling company is considering selling two of its casinos to help ease its debt burden.

MGM Mirage ( MGM - news - people ) has tapped Morgan Stanley ( MS - news - people ) to help with the possible sales of MGM Grand Detroit and Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Miss., according to The Wall Street Journal. Las Vegas-based MGM Mirage may receive between $1 billion and $2 billion for the properties, the report said.

While both casinos have been steady performers for MGM Mirage, the company could use the funds from the potential sales to pare down its more than $13 billion in debt.

MGM Mirage, which is majority owned by billionaire Kirk Kerkorian, has also had trouble funding its $8.7 billion CityCenter project. Last week it poured $200 million into the Las Vegas development, which covered the part owned by partner Dubai World. However, the companies still need to pay about $800 million more in equity before they can access a $1.8 billion credit agreement that completes its funding.

The payment has given MGM Mirage some breathing room on the project and is one of a series of moves taken recently to shore up finances.

Those actions include completing the sale of its Treasure Island casino to businessman Phil Ruffin for $775 million last month. MGM also told workers in March that it was suspending its 401(k) matching contributions and rolled back a 2.5 percent salary increase last week for a cost of living adjustment that had been given at the beginning of the year.

In addition, MGM Mirage recently won a much-needed waiver on some of its debt that gives it until May 15 to fix its finances.

MGM Mirage's stock jumped $1.51, or 32.5 percent, to $6.16 in afternoon trading. Over the past year, the shares have traded in a range of $1.81 to $61.97.
