Analyst: MGM Mirage working to fix its finances

10.04.2009, While MGM Mirage has struggled with a hefty debt burden, a JPMorgan analyst said Thursday that the casino operator is working hard to fix its finances and appears to have the support of its lenders.

MGM Mirage ( MGM - news - people ), whose majority owner is billionaire Kirk Kerkorian, has more than $13 billion in debt.

Analyst Joseph Greff said a meeting with Chairman and Chief Executive Jim Murren this week revealed that MGM is exploring various options - such as asset sales, debt for asset swaps and bond-for-bond exchanges - to help alleviate its financial pressures.

The analyst points out in a client note that the casino operator appears to have a solid relationship with its lenders and that "the banks seem to be working closely with MGM to ensure the company makes it through this restructuring."

Las Vegas-based MGM has also recently faced speculation that its $8.7 billion CityCenter project might stall, but Greff said MGM remains steadfast that the development will open later this year.

MGM indicated that it and the banks want to see CityCenter completed and that there are third parties out there who could help complete as well," Greff said.

MGM bought itself some breathing room last week when it put $200 million into the Las Vegas development, covering a payment owed by partner Dubai World as well as its own. The partners still must put down about $800 million more before they can access a $1.8 billion credit agreement that completes CityCenter's funding.

Greff reaffirmed a "Neutral" rating on MGM.
