The most expensive hotel and casino ever built

(US).- Wynn Las Vegas, the most expensive hotel and casino ever built -and the most talked-about in years- opens next Thursday with a promise to out-luxury even the most luxurious properties. The $2.7 billion endeavor has 2,700 rooms, 18 restaurants and its shopping sports brands like Chanel, Manolo Blahnik, Dior and Cartier.

The legendary casino mogul transformed Las Vegas in 1989 with the opening of the Mirage, the first showy mega-casino on the Strip. And he changed the face of Sin City again in 1998 with Bellagio, the first casino to bring luxury to the Strip on a grand scale.

Now he´s betting $2.7 billion that he can shake things up one more time with a casino to top them all.

The 2,700 rooms boast floor-to-ceiling windows, 320-thread-count European linens, flat-screen TVs and marble bathrooms. The 18 eateries are run by a who´s who of James Beard Award-winning chefs, such as Alex Stratta and Daniel Boulud. And the shopping arcades mimic a walk down Fifth Avenue with outlets such as Chanel, Manolo Blahnik, Dior and Cartier. There´s even a Ferrari/Maserati dealership. "No expense has been spared," says Anthony Curtis, publisher of the newsletter Las Vegas Advisor. "It´s not a matter of ´Will it be great?´ but ´Just how great will it be?´," he added.

Wynn ushered in the era of the spectacle with exploding volcanoes in front of the Mirage and a nightly pirate battle extravaganza at sister property Treasure Island, both designed to lure customers into the building. But his new project, dominated by a shimmering, 50-story bronze tower, breaks with the tradition.

"You´ll have to go inside to get the good stuff," Curtis says. "Wynn has determined that people should at least make a commitment to come through the doors before they benefit."

Another nod to exclusivity are several elements open only for hotel guests, including an 18-hole, Tom Fazio-designed golf course and a luxury spa with 45 treatment rooms.

The resort also will house Le Rêve, a $121-a-seat aquatic show created by Franco Dragone, the mastermind behind Las Vegas´ biggest blockbusters, including Celine Dion: A New Day and Cirque du Soleil´s O and Mystère. The smallest rooms start at $249 a night.

Wynn, who lost control of his earlier casinos in 2000 when rival MGM bought out his publicly traded Mirage Resorts, already has announced plans for a $1.4 billion, 2,300-suite sister casino next door to the current property. Dubbed Encore at Wynn Las Vegas, it´s scheduled to open in 2008.
