Croatia introduces new taxes on games of chance

07.07.2009, Minister of Finance Ivan Suker has announced the introduction of new taxes on games of chance in Croatia. People with winnings larger than 5,499 Euros will have to pay a tax of 15 to 20 % on them.

The value-added tax (VAT) on lottery tickets will no longer be in effect, but there will be a fee of 10 % of the value of lottery tickets that are sold. Those running games of chance will be obligated to pay an annual fee of 137,000 euros, and internet organizers, 412,000 euros.

The new regulation also allows managers of gambling establishments to ban people who are addicted to gambling from them. Suker said the changes would bring Croatia into compliance with EU guidelines. Asked how much money the new taxes would produce, Suker said it was hard to say. Parliament must pass legislation on the new taxes before they will enter into force.
