22.07.2009, The Asian Poker Tour Macau FestivalThe Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival, to be held from
August 12 to 23 at the StarWorld Hotel and Casino, is set for its record-breaking 12-day
run featuring some of the hottest names in poker.
It will also play a starring role in the first ever Chinese-language movie to focus on the game, organisers said.
The eagerly awaited movie “Poker King,” directed by Chan Hing-Kai and Janet Chun and starring Louis Koo, Sean Lau Ching-Wan, Stephy Tang, Cherrie In and Josie Ho, will feature The Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival. Poker King is widely tipped to become a catalyst for the popularity of the game in Asia, in the same way the 1998 Matt Damon and Edward Norton Hollywood movie “Rounders” did in the West.
Negotiations are underway to give The Asian Poker Tour’s sponsored ambassadors, known as ‘The Poker Pack’, significant roles in the film. The ‘Pack’ includes recent World Series of Poker bracelet winners JC Tran and Steve Sung, as well as Quinn Do, Nam Le, David ‘Chino’ Rheem and Kwang Soo Lee – a formidable group.
“Poker King” producers will be looking for extras from amongst The Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival players, with even the possibility of actual roles in what could well become a poker version of the 1989 Chinese-language classic ‘God of Gamblers’ which starred Chau Yun-Fat and spawned dozens of spin-offs.
Tom Hall, CEO of Asian Logic, owners of the Asian Poker Tour said “this is an exciting project, and the role The Asian Poker Macau Festival will play in the movie will definitely add to the buzz in the lead up to the event next month.” “Gross revenue from poker in Macau is estimated to have risen by 400 percent in 2008 alone and continues to rise. We are certain that 'Poker King' will be a blockbuster and a watershed for the game across Asia,” he added.
Back for 2009 and expanded to a record-breaking 12 days, last year Asia’s original poker tour attracted some of the most famous names in the game, such as the legendary Doyle Brunson, Jack Binion, Johnny Chan, John Juanda, Huck Seed, Liz Lieu, Todd Brunson, Kenny Tran and ‘The Poker Pack’ players.
