UK Gambling licences could increase

30.07.2009, Betting shops in Jersey could see a four-fold increase in the cost of gambling licences.

Alan Maclean, Minister for Economic Development, has proposed the increase after finding that the cost of licences has remained the same since 2001.

The annual fee is currently £1290, but this could increase to £5000 from next year if the proposal is accepted.

Betting shops and all other amusement and entertainment facilities on the island must have a licence to operate.

The rise would effect 29 betting offices in Jersey.

Permits to run bingo events and lotteries could also increase under the plans.
