Casino group MGM is hit by downturn

06.08.2009, Casino group MGM Mirage saw second-quarter profits fall, as the recession hit its US gambling empire.

MGM Mirage, which runs 20 casinos in Nevada, Michigan, Mississippi, Illinois and China, lost $212.6m in the three months to the end of June.

Chief executive Jim Murren said: "The operating environment, we think, will remain choppy in the near term."

Regulators in New Jersey are reviewing the firm's gaming licence over concerns about Pansy Ho, its partner in Macau.

Accusations that her father, Stanley Ho, has links to organised crime have never been proven.

Warwick Bartlett, the chief executive of Global Betting and Gaming Consultants, told the BBC that the industry was "quite surprised" by New Jersey's decision to review MGM Mirage's licence.

"You've got to remember the Nevada gaming regulators found that Pansy Ho was a suitable partner for MGM and that was after extensive hearings in 2007," he said.

Stanley Ho controlled the gaming industry in the former Portuguese colony for years until the government in Beijing decided to allow foreign casinos to open up for business.

That has brought major American gambling firms from Las Vegas and Atlantic City to Macau.

In May, New Jersey's Division of Gaming Enforcement questioned MGM Mirage's partnership with Pansy Ho and called for the regulators to hold a hearing to address the issue. A formal date has not yet been set.

MGM Mirage has a 50-50 joint venture in Macau with Pansy Ho and the company says it will challenge any adverse decision by the regulators in the state of New Jersey.

It is thought that if the authorities in New Jersey rule that its Macau partner is unsuitable, the casino company will be forced to sell its share of the Chinese venture.
