USA Online Gambling for Health Care Reform

23.09.2009, One of Barack Obama’s promises while campaigning for the leadership of the United States of America was to implement health care reform resembling that of the NHC system in the United Kingdom. Politicians in the states who are looking to make that dream come true are serious about finding the funding for the changes.

According to recent reports the U.S Senate Finance Committee is considering the money that could be brought in by taxing online gambling may be an excellent source to reach the health care reform goals. Estimates show that the government would have an extra $6 billion a year if the prohibition on online gambling were lifted and regulatory taxation was imposed on the operators. Michael Waxman from the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative has endorsed these new developments and thinks it would be a great use for the revenues from online gaming.

To that end Senator Robert Wyden (D-OR) has introduced a bill to legalize and regulate the online gaming industry to help offset the cost of health-care reform. The bill seeks to funnel all revenue created by H.R. 2267 introduced by Representative Barney Frank (D- MA)into low income subsidies for health care.

PricewaterhouseCoopers has released a study showing how the US government could reap close to $63 billion in revenue over a 10-year period, this is an amount that represents about 7.5% of the overall cost of reforms proposed for health care. This angle could really look good to more congress members because the passing of new regulations for online gambling in the USA and ear marking those funds specifically to create a fair and comprehensive health care system sounds like a win win deal. Perhaps the online poker world can use the current health care debate and see legislation passed much sooner than anticipated.
