Contentious Online Gambling Health Care Bill Axed
It sounded like a thing that was too good to be true and even a bit bold in political terms. Take one very contentious issue and add yet another issue that gets the voters up off their chairs and before you know it the politicians clam up and go home to protect their positions. Online gambling changes are not going to pass when almost everyone who opposes it is already opposing health care reform in the USA.
Senator Ron Wyden’s proposed bill to legalize and regulate online gambling for the purposes of funding a portion of health care reforms has been pulled and the senator has moved on to other things on his agenda.
Jennifer Hoelzer, Wyden’s director of communications, commented,” The last thing Senator Wyden wants to do is make it more difficult to expand subsidies for working families by introducing a new contentious issue to the debate,” adding,” So when he offers the amendment, he will do it with other funding mechanisms.”
Regan LaChapelle, spokesman for Senator Harry Reid's office said, “Changing the laws regarding online gaming is a significant detour from healthcare, a detour that Senator Reid agrees is not appropriate at this time,”
Representative Jim McDermott a Democrat from Washington and Barney Frank both voiced their support for the bill that Wyden has axed.
“Money’s money. If that’s the price we pay, that’s the price,” “I would consider adding it.” said, McDermott. Frank said,” It’s a great idea,” “Why should we leave all that money untaxed?”
Franks proposal to undo the damage done by the prohibition on online gambling in the USA is currently co sponsored by 58 Representatives. The boldness of his proposition was going to get another reason and a good old fashioned financial one. Now as per the usual the political will is not there to move forward and make everything work. Under the Democrat controlled congress, the likelihood of the Franks proposal passing is much higher than it was originally when introduced a very long time ago.

Online U.K.Sportsbooks May Pay for Integrity
Sports governing bodies argue that the potential for match fixing has grown with the advent of internet wagering and offshore gambling companies springing up overnight. In an effort to bring the problem under control the sports minister, in the UK, Gerry Sutcliffe, has set the scene for a debate that could alter the sports betting landscape and have result in big change for bookmakers and governing bodies.
The England and Wales Cricket Board, the Rugby Football Union and the FA, are trying to reform existing regulations with those that are designed to reduce the threat of match- fixing.
They want bookmakers to pay a "betting right" to offer odds on their sport, and that some of that payment be put towards policing the integrity in sports. In an effort to keep everyone happy and not to alienate the gambling industry or the sports lobby Sutcliffe has endeavoured to separate the two issues, while trying to source new money to combat problems with sport wagering.
Sutcliffe has said,” The possible threat to the integrity of sport remains an ever- present and complex problem requiring multi-agency solutions." The minister intends to look at the issues "including securing fair contributions from overseas licensed operators towards the costs of regulation" and promises to "look at the existing controls that apply to operators licensed overseas to ensure the rigorous consumer protections introduced by the Gambling Act continue to be upheld".
Bookmakers in the UK say that they already are vigilant about suspicious betting patterns and will continue to be that way. The sportsbooks maintain that the most recent allegations have come to light, because of improved transparency. Attempts to link integrity issues to funding the fight against corruption gets little support from the book makers. A senior executive at one leading bookmaker commented, "It's those that talk about integrity that have no integrity."

China and America Use Morality Card at WTO
China is very much against the free distribution of media products, especially from USA and for the most part the government uses the cultural and moral card to restrict imports. The WTO is now examining the Chinese government's appeal to the recent ruling by the organization that China must reduce it's restrictive guidelines in regard to US media deliverables. China is using the moral high ground as the reason to maintain it's state-operated distributors.
The USA tried the same tactic with it's reason for prohibiting online gambling in the USA when it was confronted by the World Trade Organization back in 2006. The WTO found no imperative to limit trade to prevent harm to the morality of US residents, to whom many forms of gambling were readily available.
The two nations are at odds when it comes to allowing each others products to enter on their respective grounds. Restrictions are created by high tax rates for foreign goods and media products. The August ruling against the Chinese may be good news for some western companies such as Microsoft and Apple who will be able to sell music online to mainland Chinese consumers.
The People's Republic of China is not pleased as with most things western this represents an invasion of more than just music it is a cultural invasion of sorts that the government of China would rather not deal with. It's a similar situation in America where the government would like to keep its citizens safe from the e commerce invasion that is making its way around the planet. Online gambling is a fact in American. Western music will one day be a fact in China. Hopefully the WTO will keep the world trading on a level playing field.
