BBPA and BHA make big industry savings in rights tribunal MUSIC USERS The British Beer & Pub Association and British Hospitality Association have secured a major victory that could save businesses combined music rights fees of 5m per year, with 15m-20m now owed in refunds. In the long-running PPL copyright dispute, the tribunal decision on the tariffs for the playing of music in public areas in pubs, bars, restaurants and hotels has seen the charges reduced dramatically, in some cases by nearly 80pc.

Extrabet sale rumoured SPORTS BETTING IG Group's sports betting division, Extrabet could be up for sale according to reports in The Times newspaper. Last week's City Diary reported the departure of Stuart Lane, the man in charge, and raised the possibility of a 'long-rumoured sale'.

Kerzner puzzled by London casino landscape CASINO Casino magnate Sol Kerzner, who was thwarted in his vision to build a 200m super-casino and hotel at the site of London's former Millennium Dome, hopes that a new government will look favourably on exhuming the plans for what he described as a great entertainment complex that would have attracted tourists from throughout Europe. In an interview ahead of last week's opening of his 250m Mazagan hotel and casino development outside Casablanca, Morocco, Mr Kerzner told The Daily Telegraph: "That's what puzzles me about London. You have many casinos but they do nothing for the tourist industry and very little for the economy."

Alderney to tailor Gaming Licences LEGISLATION The Alderney Government has approved a legislative amendment to allow the Alderney Gambling Control Commission to launch its new licensing framework as planned on January 1st, 2009. The new framework is designed to enable the Commission to tailor licences to the specific focus of each licensee, better serving both consumer-facing and business-to- business online gaming providers. Branded Swine-Flu prevention AMUSEMENT OPERATIONS A US company is offering amusement locations the opportunity to place their logo and strap line on antibacteral products used to combat the spread of the swine-flu virus H1N1. In an interview with RePlay Magazine, Lee Ann Howell, president of supplier Sadie's Toy Box said: "Think of the countless number of hands that touch every game, every machine, every day. Our goal is to get enough [amusement location] businesses to take part to hopefully diminish spreading swine flu."

Global Draw releases new content for Mexico TERMINAL GAMING Wholly-owned subsidiary of Scientific Games Corporation, IGE exhibitor The Global Draw has unveiled three new reel-based games for the Mexican market. Thai Flower, Amazon Eyes and Rosetta's Stones have been tailored for the local market and released onto terminals in gaming venues operated by Corporacion Intermericana de Entertenimiento (CIE), which operates 1,000 Global Draw terminals across 45 sites, mostly licensed bingo halls.

Publicans planning tie revolt ON TRADE Up to 2,000 publicans are planning a strike against landlords Punch Taverns and Enterprise Inns following the UK Office of Fair Trading ruling that rent and beer ties are not anti-competitive. The 'Pub Revolutionary Group' said its followers would stop paying rent and beer charges in the next few weeks.

Online gaming set to return to Germany ONLINE GAMING The newly elected coalition government of the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein has confirmed that it intends to withdraw from the country's State Treaty on Gaming, opening the market to private competition in an effort to substantially increase state revenues. IGA nominations close GAMING AWARDS Nominations for January's International Gaming Awards have now closed with participants from all sectors of the global land-based and online gaming industries drawn from Europe, Asia, the Americas and Australia in the mix. Shortlisted nominees for the fundraising gala event, which takes place on the eve of London's International Gaming Expo, will be announced on 26 November.

Poland's gaming industry facing uncertain future POLITICS Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced plans to implement anti-gambling legislation which would ban all forms of gambling outside of casinos in the country within the next five years. The draft legislation would also prohibit internet gambling and the advertising of gambling services in Poland while also introducing higher taxes on gaming machines. Counterfeit video focus sharpens on Malaysia ILLEGAL COPYING The importance of Malaysia in the fight against video piracy has been brought into sharp focus with authorities seizing up to 20 illegal machines from shopping centres in Johor Bahru. The Malaysian Ministry of Domestic Trade's enforcement division led the raids impounding what were illegal copies of Megatouch software.
