New Belgian Gaming Legislation Covers Online Operations

21.03.2010, Belgium is the country in between the Netherlands France and Germany, small but very influential in European politics. Belgium has three official languages Dutch, German and French and it has been trying to keep up with the new rules for gambling that the European Commission has been attempting to make universal.

Belgium has a long and interesting history of gambling with some of the original references to card playing dating back as far as the 1300s. Lotteries were held in the country as early as the 1400s and most forms of gambling are legal and regulated in Belgium. Regulations are in place to control problem and underage gambling with the government of the country doing it's level best to be compliant with E.U. demands.

In late 2009 the Lower Chamber of the Belgian Parliament approved changes to some of Belgium's laws regarding the age old gambling traditions to include the newest form of gambling, online gambling. The New Belgian Gaming Legislation, was brought forth in early 2010 and is expected to be resolved and in place by 2011 at the latest. The Belgian Gaming Commission will be the authority that will oversee all forms of gambling within Belgium, including online operations.

Although the National Lotteries will remain unaffected by the changes and remain a monopoly controlled by the government, all other games of chance including poker, sports wagering and the horses will ultimately rely on a licensing regime created by the new legislation. Royal Decree has placed a limit on the number of licenses available within the country with an obvious bias towards Belgian operators. Stiff rules that are coming will require any online gambling operator to first obtain a land based gambling license, then locate servers that run internet sites within Belgium's borders. It has been reported that thousands of people use online gambling web sites to play each day so it is suggested that the new legislation will be ignored by operators who will continue to offer their products in Belgium.
