Casinos benefited from the Chinese New Year

(US).- Gambling revenue in Nevada surged to a record in January, the state said on Thursday, as the Chinese New Year fell during the month and 2005 ended on a weekend, driving business to casinos.

Gambling revenue, known as the gaming win, in Nevada rose 24.4 percent to us$ 1.14 billion during the month, while the gaming win in the Las Vegas Strip, the heart of the state’s gambling industry, increased 29.5 percent to us$ 627.5 million from a year earlier, the state’s Gaming Control Board said in a statement.

Casinos benefited from the Chinese New Year, which fell during the last three days of the month, and because December ended on a Saturday, Marc Falcone, an analyst at Deutsche Bank, wrote in a research note. "Regardless, we view these results as a sign of continued strong demand and the overall healthiness of (Las Vegas)," Falcone wrote.

Properties along the Las Vegas Strip include the MGM Mirage -owned Mandalay Bay, Harrah’s Entertainment, Caesars Palace and the Wynn Las Vegas resort and casino, owned by Wynn Resorts. Other major gaming companies in Nevada include Station Casinos and Boyd Gaming. Reno area revenue rose 16.7 percent to us$ 55.5 million.
