It was up 8.4 percent compared with the same month in 2005 (US).- While casinos in several Nevada markets reported declines in July, the us$ 1.04 billion statewide total won from gamblers was a record for the month, the state Gaming Control Board reported this week.

Frank Streshley, senior research analyst for the board, said the July win was up 8.4 percent compared with the same month in 2005. He added the win was "a lot stronger than expected" due in part to a July 4 that fell on a Tuesday and became part of a 4-day break for many tourists.

The Sugar Shane Mosley-Fernando Vargas fight in mid-July in Las Vegas also figured in the win, Streshley said. But the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe didn’t do much for casinos on Tahoe’s south shore.

The July win there was down 6.7 percent compared with the same month in 2005. Other markets that showed declined included the Reno-Sparks area, downtown Las Vegas, Laughlin and the Carson City area.

The win was the amount left in casino coffers after gamblers wagered us$ 14.5 billion during July - a record for the month. That included us$ 12 billion bet in slot machine games, and the rest on table games. The state collected us$ 65.4 million in percentage fees on gambling winnings, based on the July win. That was up 1.1 percent compared with the fees collected for the same month in 2005.

Just over half the us$ 1.04 billion win came from casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, which reported a combined casino win of us$ 531.7 million during the month. That’s a 10 percent increase from the same month a year ago. A breakdown of the win showed that slots accounted for about us$ 698 million of the total. That included us$ 302.7 million won by multidenomination slots, up 38.5 percent. Penny slots were second with a win of us$ 110 million, up 33.8 percent.

The board said live games, including poker, accounted for the us$ 349 million balance of total. That included us$ 120 million won on blackjack tables, up 4.3 percent; us$ 41.3 million on craps tables, up 6.3 percent; us$ 28.2 million on roulette, up 3.2 percent; and us$ 4.2 million on sports pools, down 5.4 percent.
