Nevada casinos have made a financial comeback, according to figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board for June. The June difference between the amount bet by patrons and the amount paid out to winners (called the win) totaled $809.19 million. That figure is $94.84 million more than the previous June, a 13.28 percent increase.

The board breaks the win down by geographic areas, including: The Strip: The win increased 19.2 percent to $404.21 million. Downtown: The win rose 4.5 percent to $52.56 million. North Las Vegas: The win increased 38 percent to $21.10 million. The Boulder Strip: The win was up 26 percent to $61.38 million.

Some of the win increases must be credited to new or expanded casinos. Other factors which increase the win include an increase of players, more action by the average bettor and smaller wins by players. The increase in players comes from the road rather than McCarran International Airport. Air travel has been fairly static for the past year but the roads to Las Vegas have been more crowded.

The Nevada Department of Transportation keeps a record of the number of vehicles crossing into Nevada from California at Primm (Interstate-15). The June 20-21 weekend set a record for traffic on a non-holiday weekend. DOT says the totals for June exceeded 1.2 million, the most for a June and 4.7 percent more than last June. Traffic may have been greater in August. Although official figures have not yet been released, August usually is 10 percent to 15 percent greater than other summer months as DOT considers it a heavy vacation month, with the peak normally in mid-August. However, a three-day closure of I-15 between Barstow and Baker in mid-August due to rain-caused weakening of bridge supports might affect the numbers. Slots are the biggest source of casino revenue and slot revenue appears to be increasing. The 2002 revenue from slots was $6.3 billion, which was 1.1 percent more than the previous year.

The only other casino game that exceeded $1 billion was Blackjack, which showed $1.1 billion in revenue, down 4.5 percent from the previous year. Slots and bingo were the only games that showed increases. All other games suffered a downturn, with double-digit decreases for Pai Gow (14.9 percent), Mini-Baccarat (14.5 percent) and Caribbean Stud (13.1 percent). Revenue from all table games totaled $2.797 billion, less than half compared to slots revenue. Even adding bingo and sports and race book revenue, the total revenue was less than $3 billion.

All the figures show one basic fact: In the end, the casinos are the winners over the players. Maybe that's why more casinos are being built.
