07.11.2004, Lesen Sie hier den Bericht über «Playing Poker - Tournaments. it's all about surviving».
You're playing a no-limit Hold 'Em tournament, half the field is gone, and you catch pocket Ks. And you have to lay them down.
It's not as bad as having your aces cracked, but still.
That was the situation a player calling himself Mickeyslick1 (love those poker names) e-mailed about when he faced a preflop all-in of $15,000:
"Since I had roughly the same amount of chips, I decided to fold and not risk it. All my friends say it was stupid, and I myself think it was stupid. What do you think? Pocket kings are nice but aces are better."
Here's the deal: Tournaments are all about surviving, even if it involves laying down pocket Ks, even if it's the World Series of Poker.
Phil Gordon, the insightful pro who also co-hosts Bravo's "Celebrity Poker Showdown," faced that dilemma while trying to reach the final table at the 2001 WSOP when Mike Matusow, a well-known tight-aggressive pro, made it $30,000 to go from under the gun.
"The only hand that can beat me is aces," Gordon said. "So, I have to raise here, and I have to find the right amount. I want him to call with queens, but I want him to reraise with aces so I can throw my hand away."
The chip leader with $680,000, Gordon raised $100,000. The action folded around to Gordon's "archenemy," Phil Hellmuth, who was in the small blind with $640,000 and promptly reraised all in.
"This is where you delve into a guy's psychology," Gordon said. "(Hellmuth) wants to get into the final table of the World Series of Poker more than any human being on the planet.
"The only hand he can have is aces. He can't do that with kings. He has got to have pocket aces, period, end of story."
Matusow folded his Qs. Decision, Gordon.
"I said, 'Phil, I know you have the best hand,' and I tossed my cards in front of me," Gordon said. "He turns over his pocket aces. I said, 'Everybody knows you had that.'
"He said, 'What did you fold, ace-queen offsuit?' I said, 'Yeah. That's what I had.' He said, 'That's what I put you on.' I said, 'Come on, dude. You think I'm screwing around? I had pocket kings.' He said, 'You did not,' and he stands up from his chair and says, 'You did not fold pocket kings before the flop. No way.'
"I reached over and turned my hand over. He was crazy because he'd won only $130,000 in a pot where he had aces against pocket queens and kings."
