Admit it: One of the coolest things in poker is pulling off a bluff. The artistry involved makes bluffing one of the most compelling and satisfying accomplishments at the table.
Thing is, bluffing is tougher in limit poker than in no-limit because your opponent might be facing only two or three big bets, not every chip he has. That's why the key to a successful bluff is that it has to make sense.
"If you're calling a guy and then you lead out on the river, it doesn't make any sense," said Erick Lindgren, a young, talented pro who won the PartyPoker Million and Ultimate Poker Classic events on the World Poker Tour last year. "The guy's going to typically call you."
At the final table of a limit poker tournament against Champion of the Year Daniel Negreanu on the PartyPoker Cruise, Lindgren drew 10-6 of diamonds. He raised on the button, Negreanu reraised, and Lindgren called.
The flop came 9 of clubs, 8 of diamonds, 5 of diamonds.
"I had a monster draw with my straight and flush possibilities," Lindgren said of his nine outs for a flush and his four outs to fill his bellybuster straight with a 7.
"He bet out, and I could've raised him there, but I figured he was on some sort of draw, so it would be harder to bluff him out. I said, 'I don't care what happens; I'm just going to raise him on the turn.' Hopefully a scare card would come."
It came: a queen of spades.
"I knew Daniel was scared I might have that card," Lindgren said. "On a 9-8 board, I might have a jack. I might've been going for my straight with overcards.
"He bet out again, and I raised him, which I had planned to do, but I really wanted a scare card to fit the puzzle, because if you're going to bluff, especially in limit poker, it better make sense because the price is too strong for him to call."
Negreanu, who frequently wears hockey jerseys at the table, thought for a while and mucked his hand.
"Later he told me had ace-eight, giving him a pair of eights, which looked really good with a 9-8- 5 flop, but not so good when the queen hit," Lindgren said. "So I got lucky that that scare card came and I was able to bluff him out."
The bluff worked because it made sense in the course of the turn of the cards and the betting patterns.
"You have to play a hand out in your head and imagine that you had those cards, and then you have to exercise what you would do if you did have those cards," Lindgren said. "I'm going to run simulations through my head of several different combinations of what I could've had and how I would've played it. Then I can represent that."
