Congratulations Tony Veckey, Winner of Event 54

It took nearly 11 hours for Tony Veckey to claim the title, but he'll tell you it was worth the effort and the missed flight home to Chicago. Our newest WSOP bracelet winner bested a field of 2,818 to walk away with the hardware and more than $673,000 in first- place money.

Today was no piece of cake either, as 28 players returned to battle for the prize. Eliminations moved quickly though, and we were down to 10 players just after the dinner break. Veckey played an aggressive and smart game throughout, raising his opponents and applying pressure whenever possible. His most impressive play, however, may be the hand he didn't play when he laid down pocket kings preflop to an all in raise. In the end, his tactics worked as he bested Jason Wheeler in a hard fought heads-up battle to claim the bracelet.

Abe Mosseri Wins Event #55! ($165,521)

There were 1,927,500 chips in play for Event #55, and after 24 levels of draw poker, those chips are all piled in front of one man. Abe Mosseri has just completed his run through the field, outlasting everyone who came against him to win this tournament. Mosseri has one earlier cash in this WSOP, and his second payday turns out to be the one he's been waiting for as it comes alongside his first-ever gold bracelet.

Our event began three days ago with 257 runners trying to outdraw each other to the worst hands in this Deuce to Seven Lowball funfest. As the only Triple Draw event this year, Event #55 attracted a pro-heavy field full of gamblers and math wizards. Seventy- three of them would survive the first day, while some big names like Greg Raymer, Mike Sexton, Erick Lindgren, Barry Greenstein, and Robert Williamson III were left by the wayside early on. Those 73 runners were back on Tuesday to make their run toward the final table. The money bubble hit at 24, and it came quickly and without much drama. There was another huge contingent of notable faces who would fall just short of the money, including Jimmy Fricke, Victor Ramdin, Shawn Sheikhan, Greg Mueller, Steve Sung, Allen Kessler, and John Phan. Justin "Boosted J" Smith squeaked into the payouts, and Hasan Habib and Daniel Negreanu were in there as small cashers as well.

Fast forward twelve hours to the dawn of Day 3. Nine players returned, and it was clear from the start that Abe Mosseri was going to be hard to beat. Despite having Nam Le, John Juanda, and Blair Rodman to get through, there was no doubt that he could pull out the win. Within a one-hour span early in the day, Mosseri showed down Number One and Number Two twice each, along with a whole slew of good eights. Although a few players would find themselves in the top spot on the board, nobody could hold the lead for any length of time with Mosseri breathing down their necks. Eventually, after about six hours of poker, Mosseri triumphed over Masayoshi Tanaka in a quick and decisive heads-up battle to take the title. That wraps it up for Event #55. There are just two more tournaments to finish up before the Main Event arrives in all its glory on July 3rd. You can bet Abe Mosseri will be there, possibly even sporting his shiny new gold bracelet.

One more time, Congratulations to Abe Mosseri, Event #55 Champion!

No-Limit Hold'em / Six Handed (Event 56)
Tuesday, June 30, 2009 to Thursday, July 02, 2009 Buy-in: $5,000 Prizepool: $4,361,000 Entries: 928

Matt Hawrilenko

Result: Matt Hawrilenko Josh Brikis Faraz Jaka Sean Keeton Jonas Wexler Matthew Waxman Robert Kay Thorsten Schaefer James St Hilaire Rory Mathews Alex Venovski John Conkright Aurelien Guiglini Peter Feldman

Congratulations to Matt Hawrilenko, Event No. 56 Champion ($1,003,163)

After three long days of intense, high-action, short-handed no-limit hold'em, it ended in a flash as Matt "Hoss_TBF" Hawrilenko defeated Josh Brikis heads up in just four hands to win the last WSOP gold bracelet of the summer, and a whopping $1,003,163. Hawrilenko tops a field of 928 that included many formidable online and live pros, just 16 of whom made it through to today's final day of play.

Among those who made it, Eugene Katchalov suffered some early bad luck and went out in 15th. Peter Feldman, another dangerous foe, was among the chip leaders when play began today, but he also suffered a couple of unfortunate hands and ended the day in 14th. James St. Hilaire had built a sizable chip advantage by then, but he, too, ran into a couple of rough hands -- one huge one with Josh Brikis in which the latter spiked a queen on the river to win with A-Q versus St. Hilaire's A-K -- and went out in 9th.

Soon they had reached the seven-handed final table, from which Robert Kay (7th), Matthew Waxman (6th), and Jonas Wexler (5th) were the first to go. The remaining four battled for some time before Sean Keeton, after battling gamely with the short stack for some time, was finally eliminated by Hawrilenko. Three-handed then lasted another hour before Faraz Jaka took pocket queens up against Hawrilenko's ace-king, and Hawrilenko won the race. Hawrilenko had just over 9 million to Brikis' almost 5 million when heads up began. And just four hands later it was suddenly all over. Congratulations to Matt Hawrilenko, who after a dozen WSOP cashes and four final tables has finally broken through to win his first WSOP gold bracelet!

Thanks for following our coverage of Event No. 56 on PokerNews, and be sure to come back tomorrow for Day 1a of the Main Event!
