US).- The construction services company Perini Building, subsidiary of Framingham, signed a construction contract worth us$ 1 billion to build The Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The firm will officially break ground on the 5 million-square-foot mixed-used project at the end of this month, and the casino is expected to open in mid-2008.

Located on 8.5 acres, the project site is on the Vegas strip next to the Bellagio Hotel & Casino. Perini’s contract includes the construction of: two high-rise hotel and condo-hotel towers 600 feet tall with 3,000 luxury hotel rooms and suites as well as condo-hotel residences; more than 150,000 square feet of business convention and conference space and a 75,000-square-foot casino.

The project will also include 300,000 square feet of retail space and restaurants, an 1,800 seat theater, a 500 seat cabaret, a 50,000-square-foot spa, salon and fitness center, multiple nightclubs and a 3,800-car underground parking structure, as well as a five-acre pool deck overlooking the strip.

"The project’s unique architecture makes The Cosmopolitan one of the most stunning projects Perini has been involved with," said Dick Rizzo, chairman of Perini Building, in a statement. "The property’s prime location and sleek, contemporary glass design combined with its vertical integration of attractions will make this a Las Vegas centerpiece." The construction will involve one of the largest excavations in the history of Las Vegas with Perini required to move more than 1 million cubic yards of dirt from the site to create a 90 foot deep hole in order to begin construction.
