(US).- A hurricane-spawned surge nationally in gasoline prices didn’t stop gamblers from traveling to Nevada casinos in September, judging from the near-record us$ 1.01 billion the clubs won during the month. According to the official information, this is the 14th positive month in a row.

The state Gaming Control Board released a report Thursday detailing the win, which was a record for a September, 9.6 percent higher than the September 2004 win and the 14th positive month in a row for the clubs.

The win, the amount left in casino coffers after gamblers wagered us$ 13.7 billion, marked the third time the casinos have hit or exceeded the us$ 1 billion mark in a one-month period. "Going into the month, we had some caution because of Hurricane Katrina and the high price of gas," said Control Board research analyst Frank Streshley. "We thought we’d see some slowdown, especially with drive-in gamblers - and that’s obviously not the case."

In October, the state collected us$ 68.1 million in percentage fees based on the September win. That’s up nearly 11 percent compared with the fees collected for the same month in 2004. A breakdown of the casinos’ us$ 1.01 billion win shows that Las Vegas Strip resorts accounted for more than half the total, us$ 541.2 million. That’s a 17.8 percent increase over the same month a year ago.

Most other major markets around the state also reported gains, except for downtown Las Vegas which declined 7.2 percent, Stateline casinos on Tahoe’s south shore which were down 13.9 percent and the Boulder Strip, down 3.5 percent.

Clubs in Washoe County, encompassing Reno, had their fourth straight positive month, winning us$ 99.1 million for a 7 percent gain. A breakdown shows Reno was up 7.5 percent while neighboring Sparks was up 5 percent.

The total September win included us$ 359 million from table games. A breakdown shows us$ 122.9 million came from blackjack tables - a record for any live game in any month, and a nearly 43 percent increase over the same month a year earlier.

Baccarat tables around the state - most of them on the Las Vegas Strip - won us $51.8 million for a 19.2 percent increase. Mini-baccarat tables added another us $31.7 million for a 193 percent gain. Craps took in us$ 41.3 million, down 3.9 percent, and roulette generated about us$ 26 million for the clubs, up 26.7 percent.

Statewide slot winnings, while barely up, accounted for us$ 643.4 million of the total win. The biggest producers were multi-denomination slots, which accounted for us$ 239.8 million of the total, up 41.6 percent; and quarter slots, which were down nearly 23 percent but still had a win total of us$ 118.5 million.
